Assignments

Your mark in this course will depend upon four assignments:

  1. A 1200-1500 word paper on Luxemburg, Lenin, and Mao, due on 5 October. Question: What makes political thought revolutionary? (30% of course grade)
  2. A 1200-1500 word paper on Fanon, Althusser, and MacKinnon, due on 2 November. Question: What is the problem with humanism? (30% of course grade)
  3. A take-home final essay exam (1200-1500 words), on a question to be announced. (30% of course grade)
  4. Reading questions: questions about the reading asked at the beginning of most (approximately 2/3 of) classes. You will turn in your answers on note-cards. You can miss up to two reading questions without penalty. Every missed question beyond two will reduce this portion of your grade by one letter grade (A à B, etc.). There is no penalty for getting the answer wrong. Every 3 right answers will buy back a missed question, or, if you have not missed any questions, add 1/3 a grade point of extra credit to your reading question grade. To illustrate: If, at the end of the term, you have answered every reading question, and have correctly answered 7 reading questions, you will receive a 4.67 for 10% of your course grade (4.0 + (2 x .33)). (10% of the course grade)
